A Message from Our School Board Chair

Jolee Crosson

"We want BCS to always be a space where kids can find their voice, and where we keep pushing ourselves to think differently about what education can be."

When we first chose Bullis Charter School for our son, our reasons were fairly simple. We had heard good things, it was close to home, and we liked the focus on project-based learning and performing arts. What I didn't know then was how much we would come to value the community we are joining.

BCS has been an incredibly caring place for our family and, more importantly, a place where my son has been encouraged to figure out who he is, what he cares about, and how to find his voice. I've seen that happen in big and small ways - from project-based learning to performing arts, where every learner has the opportunity to step on stage, be heard, and build confidence. To me, that is what educating the whole child looks like.

BCS was founded more than 20 years ago by parents who believed there could be a different approach to public education. One of the best ways we can honor that history is by continuing to challenge ourselves:

  • Are we still innovating?

  • What does educational innovation need to look like for the children we serve today and those that will walk through our doors 20 years from now?

  • How do we continue to evolve without losing the things that make BCS special?

As Board Chair, I want our Board to be transparent, accessible, and collaborative; willing to listen to different perspectives, have difficult conversations, and keep looking ahead.

My son has had the opportunity to find his voice at BCS. I want the children who come through BCS twenty years from now to have that same opportunity - and for BCS to remain a place willing to think differently about what education can be. I'm honored to take on this role and excited for the work ahead.

Warmly,

Jolee Crosson
Board Chair
