Enrollment Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply to attend Bullis Charter School?
Any child residing in the state of California can apply to Bullis Charter School.

Is there tuition?
Since BCS is a public school, there is no tuition. However, BCS receives less public funding than other Los Altos public schools. The Los Altos School District does not currently share with BCS any of the augmented funding it receives from local parcel tax revenues. At the same time, as a small school with a full range of enrichment programs, BCS spends more per student than many public elementary schools.

In order to make its comprehensive program possible, BCS depends on its entire parent community to make generous donations each year. To help cover a funding gap of $4,000 per student, we ask each family to donate towards the BCS Annual Campaign goal of $1,300,000. While we work hard to diversify our funding sources and control spending, we anticipate that the requested donation amount will increase in future years since education costs are rising faster than State funding. All donations to BCS are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law.

Does submitting an application guarantee my child a spot at Bullis Charter School?
No. If there are too many applications for a specific grade level, then enrollment is determined by lottery.

How does the enrollment process work?

California Education Code and our charter with the Santa Clara County Office of Education govern the enrollment procedures. Bullis Charter School accepts applications for any student residing in California. If the number of students who wish to attend exceeds the school's capacity, then enrollment is determined by a public random drawing.

If a random drawing is necessary, SCCOE authorized enrollment preferences are applied based on the following hierarchy within each grade level:

  1. Siblings of current BCS students who reside within the Los Altos School District (LASD) have first preference.
  2. 50% of the available openings for students residing in the former Bullis-Purissima School attendance area as defined by LASD in 2003 have the next priority.
  3. Other LASD students have the next priority.
  4. Siblings of current BCS students who reside out-of-district are given priority after that.
  5. Out-of-district students without BCS siblings receive the final priority.
When will the lottery occur?
February 2009.

How can I get more information or a tour of the school?
Go to Parent Info Nights (above) to find out more.

I want my child to finish his/her current school year without any distractions. Will my child’s name be kept confidential?
Yes. We will not release the name of your child without your consent. However, we may need to share the number of students planning to come to Bullis from other public schools to allow the Los Altos School District to plan for their classes.

If I enroll my child at Bullis Charter School, can I change my mind?
Yes, you can. Filling out and returning an enrollment form does not commit you to a decision. If for any reason your plans change and you no longer desire to apply for enrollment, we would appreciate notification as soon as possible so that we can offer your child's place to another student.

How do I get my other questions answered?
We would be happy to answer any other questions you may have. Just email us at Info@BullisCharterSchool.com or call 650-947-4939 x420.

Please be sure to let us know what grade level you are inquiring about and the current school district you reside in so that we can give you complete information if you are not available when we return your call.

You are also welcome to stop by the Bullis Charter School office at 102 West Portola Ave, Los Altos.
