I am pleased to report that the open enrollment process for the upcoming school year resulted in over 560 applications from students wishing to attend Bullis Charter School, including enough kindergarten applications to fill over thirteen (13) entering classes. This record setting demand is a tremendous compliment to the work of our Principal and Staff, and strong evidence of the need for a high quality public
school of choice option in the Los Altos area.
Today, however, even as BCS expands to include a middle school, it remains housed on a campus roughly half the size of the smallest District elementary school.
We are committed to working constructively with the Los Altos School District to obtain the physical space
required to better accommodate growing demand and to improve the experience for our current students and families. We are currently negotiating our annual Proposition 39 Facilities Request with the District. The recently received District preliminary offer of facilities keeps BCS on its current site.
A new issue we must contend with is the District's consideration of increased class-sizes next year on its campuses. Although the District has yet to make a decision on its own classroom loading, their preliminary facilities offer to BCS is based upon a projection that the District will place up to 30 students in each of their classrooms next year. This resulted in a preliminary facilities offer to BCS of one fewer classroom than we currently have, despite our projected enrollment growth of 54 new students! If the District's final facilities offer is anything close to the preliminary offer, it means that we will be faced with tough choices to preserve our lower class sizes, including the possibility of converting other spaces on our campus into classrooms for our students.
Despite these challenges, the BCS School Board remains hopeful that this year's Facilities Request process will usher in a more productive relationship with the District than in previous years. In a recent letter to LASD parents, Superintendent Tim Justus acknowledged that there is a growing demand to attend our school so that families can benefit from our innovative curriculum. We appreciate his acknowledgement and view it as a positive step forward.
We plan to keep you updated regarding our public school facilities and the Proposition 39 process. To view the District's preliminary facilities offer and our initial response, please visit our website.
